148 Hiroo
In the Sea, and Near
It
An exhibition of photographs by Michael E. J. Stanley at I48 Hiroo
From now until autumn, Marcus Yip’s restaurant 148 Hiroo will be graced by an exhibition of analog photographic prints by the U.S.-born, Japan-based photographer Michael E. J. Stanley. Michael has been a resident of this country for three decades and over that time his work has appeared in a long list of magazines that includes titles from virtually every major Japanese publisher. Michael has used a variety of techniques and technical skills to convey visual stories from around the world. These stories have often required working in challenging conditions, such as underwater in the surging surf of some of Japan’s farthest islands, suspended by climbing gear in the Borneo rainforest canopy, or in the back seat of high-performance fighter jets flying practice strike missions in the mountains of South Korea.
The photographs on display on both floors of the restaurant are drawn from Michael’s bank of images amassed during his travels; as the exhibit’s title suggests, there are all images of places in the sea, or near it. On the ground floor is a selection of color photographs from around the world – some underwater and some terrestrial -- while the upstairs dining floor hosts a gallery-like display of monochrome underwater images, all of which were shot in Japan’s southern seas. All these are analog silver-gelatin photographic prints; they are not scanned copies or digital printouts. The photographs are available for purchase. Those on display are for the most part unique prints, as they were printed singly and not as a parts of a print series. Please feel free to consult with Marcus or his staff, or to contact Michael directly at mejstanley@gmail.com.
Marcus and Michael both hope that you can find time to drop by and enjoy a fine meal and some wine along with the photographs. Directions and further information about the restaurant are available via the link at the bottom of this page, below the bilingual e-mail notice.
